A Worked Forage Example: From a New Label to Its Results

Where content classification is enabled on a deployment.

Purpose: find payment card numbers in your files, from start to finish.

Create the sticker. Open Records, then Labels, and press New label. Name it Payment card, choose a Category (or New category, in lower case, such as "financial"), choose the Severity Highest, write a Description such as "A credit or debit card number", and press Create label. No file has the label yet. If a Payment card label is already there, use it and go to step 2.
Write the instruction. Open Content Rules and press New rule. Name it "Card numbers" and choose Payment card under Label to give. Under Search words type card | visa | mastercard. Under Detectors choose pattern, type a pattern for 13 to 19 digits under Pattern (the box shows one as an example), and choose payment card number under Number check. A number that fails the check, such as an invoice number, is not counted.
Try it. Press Test run. It shows how many files hold the search words (the most the rule could find), a sample checked with the whole rule with each find shown in its sentence, and a projected range across the files read so far. Nothing is saved or labelled. If the sample finds the wrong things, change the rule and try again.
Save it, then switch it on. Press Save rule; it is saved as not active. Select the rule, press Activate on the version you tried, then Activate this version.
Let Forage work. Forage now checks every file it has read against the new rules. The Checked figure drops, then climbs back as it goes.
See what it found.
- On the Classification Overview, Files by label shows how many files have Payment card.
- On Labels, click Payment card to list its files, where they are and what was found in each.
- On Reports, choose Labels by file, pick Payment card under Labels, press Run report, and press Export PDF or Export CSV for the full list.
